Is MCPWorks really free to self-host? +
Yes. The full platform is released under BSL 1.1 and free to self-host with no agent or execution limits. You provide the hardware (a Linux server with Docker). The BSL license allows free use for any purpose except reselling MCPWorks as a managed hosting service. After 4 years, the license converts to Apache 2.0.
Why pay for Cloud when I can self-host? +
Self-hosting means managing PostgreSQL, Redis, nsjail sandboxes, TLS certificates, backups, and container orchestration. That is 5-15 hours per month of DevOps work. At typical engineer rates, that costs more than a Cloud Pro subscription. Cloud also adds multi-tenant namespace isolation, per-agent managed subdomains, team RBAC, and SLA guarantees that the self-hosted edition does not include.
What happens when I hit my execution limit? +
MCPWorks uses hard caps, not overages. At 80% and 95% of your limit, you receive email warnings. At 90%, a one-click upgrade prompt appears in the dashboard with immediate Stripe proration. If you don't upgrade, functions pause at 100% until your next billing cycle. You will never receive a surprise bill.
What does BYOAI mean? +
BYOAI stands for Bring Your Own AI. MCPWorks is infrastructure, not an AI provider. You connect your own LLM API key per agent from any of 14+ supported providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Kimi, and more). You control the model, the cost, and the provider. Switch anytime. We never see your prompts or responses.
What is the BSL 1.1 license? +
The Business Source License 1.1 is the same license used by HashiCorp, Sentry, CockroachDB, and MariaDB. You can use, modify, and self-host MCPWorks for any purpose. The only restriction: cloud providers cannot resell MCPWorks as a managed hosting service without a commercial license. After 4 years, the code automatically converts to Apache 2.0 with no restrictions.
